Design is planting a tree

Hi, I'm Yingxia /yingsha/, UX Architect @ESRI, have 2+ years' work experience in e-commerce and  retailer, graduated from Human-Computer Interaction Design master program at Indiana University Bloomington.

For me, design is like planting a tree. We keep supplying nutrients for it with our thinking, research and skills. The deeper the root, the more chance it bears sweet fruits. This is also my metaphor for life.

About Me

STUDY JOURNEY

  • I just graduated from Human-computer Interaction Design master program at Indiana University. Through my study, I've dug deeper into what makes a good experience and how to make solid design decisions through situated design processes and methods, improved my design thinking ability, and practiced my graphical skills.
  • I have another master's degree in Human Geography. During this study experience I did research on analyzing natural, market and human factors through data analysis, literature review, field investigation, map analysis, interviews, questionnaires and other methods. It enabled me to use factual and data-based analysis in my design work, helping me move past surface details to identify deeper problems and deliver effective solutions.
  • I majored in pedagogy for geography when I was an undergraduate. Courses such as Psychology and Educational Research Methods equipped me with skills in observation, experiment, investigation, statistics and other key methods for defining students’ needs and difficulties and designing solutions in accordance with their individual aptitude. This experience has improved my empathy for others and has enabled me to be the heart, mind, and voice of users in my career.

WORK JOURNEY

  • Last summer I interned at Walmart Design as a UX designer. I mainly work on a project utilizing store robot BossaNova to help store associates do their daily work. I was exposed to the whole design process and worked closely with business partners and developer teams. Here I experienced the difference of the work culture between the US and Chinese companies. I also conducted an interview program and interviewed 6+ designers, product owners, directors in different teams to learn about their thoughts about product, design and designers from different perspectives.
  • I’ve worked as an e-commerce and social media Product Designer for 2 years at Mogujie.com, which is a Chinese e-commerce fashion platform with more than 10 million daily users. This experience has given me a better understanding of how projects are undertaken in businesses, and how to make fully considered decisions as well as facilitate cross-functional teamwork. For me as a product manager, the key to coordinating teamwork is the same as communicating with users: using their language.
  • My first work experience in design is the internship as a product designer at Huaban.com for half a year. This is where my design dream began. As the only product designer in the iOS team, I didn’t only do design work, I also facilitated the teamwork, did content editing and operation when needed. I created internal feedback channels, did testing when the QA team was too busy to support, analyzed data and made data monitoring plans, I also discussed business plans with CEO and tested ideas with quick iteration. The product was like my baby - I was willing to do anything to make it better, now still is such.

SPICE OF LIFE

  • I love watching movies and reading books. Movies and books give me opportunities to see and experience other things and lives that I may never experience on my own, strengthens my empathy and helps me break through the limitations of subjectivity. My favorite movie is The Big Blue by Luc Besson (1988). The book I read most recently is The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream.
  • I take photos, collect quotes, and combine them. This is my photography diary - MomentoMori, It has been running on for almost 5 years. Almost all of the emotions we want to express, there are always ancient or modern people who have described it with wonderful words in movies, books, songs or poems. The following quote is from the lyrics of a song which express the meaning of what I just said - “感谢永远有歌,把心境道破 ” (Eason Cheng, 歌颂) .
  • I'm learning and enjoying painting and 3D modeling. These are my ways of meditation. I'm using Procreate to draw, Blender to do 3D modeling.
  • I also enjoy meditation, handicraft, hiking, running, visiting bookstores and museums, staying in cafes, and traveling. I’m interested in and doing an individual project on personal knowledge management.
